Who are Forensic Nurses & what do they do?

Forensic Nurse Examiners are specially trained nurses to provide comprehensive medical, forensic exams to victims of assault.  Types of exams include sexual assault, domestic violence, strangulation, elder abuse, child physical abuse and suspect examinations. They use cutting-edge, forensic technology to document injuries.

An exam by a FNE is available every day 24/7

The nurses follow up with victims after initial exams to ensure their health and safety regarding medical concerns related to the assault.

The Exam Could Include:

  • Forensic examination of assault or abuse victims with evidence collection

  • Photographic documentation of injuries

  • Treatment and evaluation of sexually transmitted infections

  • Pregnancy risk evaluation

  • Expert witness testimony

“Law enforcement provides the criminal investigation and forensic nurses provide the clinical investigation.”

— Virginia Lynch, Founder of Forensic Nursing
