Sexual Assault Awareness Month: April 1 - April 30, 2010

April is sexual assault awareness month. The theme - "Prevent Sexual Violence... in our work places" - is continued this year. The slogan "Respect Works" has been added. Between 1993 and 1999, 36,000 people were raped or sexually assaulted at work. Sexual violence on the job correlates with decreased productivity, higher rates of absenteeism, and lower employee morale. Interrupted work, as a result of sexual violence, can also jeopardize the economic stability of individuals, families, and communities. Environments that encouage respectful and responsible behavior discourage sexual assault.

Candlelight Service: "Remember my Name" TBA

The candlelight service is an annual event to commemorate victims of domestic violence. It celebrates the lives of survivors and marks the depth of their struggle to escape. The service concludes with "Remember my Name". A role of the names of victims in our community who lost their lives to domestic violence is read to remind us that we must never turn away from the violence in our families.

Volunteer Recognition Dinner: TBA

It's hard to find the words to describe just how important volunteers are to Crisis Services of North Alabama. But imagine that your out of work, in the dead of winter, with three small children and the power company is coming to cut off your heat and then when you call for help the phone just rings and rings or goes to an answering machine. Our volunteers make sure our phones are always answered. The Volunteer Recognition Dinner offers a small measure of thanks for all they do to help people in our community.

Kiss A Cop: TBA

This is the day we search out police officers all over North Alabama and give them a great big kiss. I know what you're thinking but there's more than one way to kiss a cop. Our kisses are wrapped in foil and we put them in small bag and tie it with a purple ribbon. Its our way way of saying thank you to North Alabama police officers for all they do to help victims of family violence in our communities. Not what you thought maybe, but police officers like chocolate too.
